I want to talk about the Middle East, since the topic that is the perpetual powder keg of this region has always been of interest to me. I ask myself how this area can be the subject of insistent turmoil, constant battles, wars, and conflict, and what’s next for the area that we now call the Middle East.
Before I unwrap the current predicament that the country finds itself in, let’s briefly devote one paragraph to the rise of this country.
The following paragraph is a factual overview of its almost 75-year history.
By way of a U.N. resolution, the world’s most powerful members of the organization voted in favor of forming two countries for the two groups of people that claimed their historic heritage to the land that Britain inherited as part of its post-WW1 treaties.
On the eve of the vote, a war broke out because the result wasn’t acceptable to one group.
As the fighting persisted, in May 1948 (soon to be 75 years ago), in the middle of the war and to the dismay of the Americans, Israeli politicians declared the country of Israel, knowing that losing the war would mean they could not go back to the U.N. and ask to turn back the clock to November 29th, 1947, the day of the vote.
It was a huge risk that, if gone wrong, would seal the fate of the Jewish people when they were so close to getting their own sovereign country after thousands of years.
By 1949, truce agreements were inked, and the new country struggled with poverty and all the other challenges of a new country whose neighbors didn’t view it as a legitimate entity.

Where do we find Israel today?
75 years later, it has a peace agreement with Egypt and Jordan, while the situation with Syria remains relatively quiet. The same can be said about Lebanon, but there are organizations within the country that are opposed to the entity called Israel and seek to destroy it. In recent years, Trump’s Abraham Accords have normalized relations with many other countries in the region.
Of note is Iran, a country with a rich and beautiful history that had a peaceful and fruitful relationship with Israel until the mid-1980s, even going so far as to say that Israel was selling the Iranians weapons. Since this took a 180-degree turn, the greatest threat to Israel has been the Iranian nuclear program. In the past few decades, it has gone in a different direction…
Israel won’t admit it, but it has been a nation with nuclear powers for decades now.
A nuclear weapon is a form of leverage. It is a clear statement of power telling the region “Hey, we are here, and if pushed far enough, we have the ability to wreak havoc.”
But, aside from that form of leverage, it is a point of no return with regard to the other countries of the area. If Iran achieves its atomic capabilities, this will include the Saudis, Turkish, and perhaps the Emirates.
What we know is this: the Middle East has been a jungle for thousands of years, and all we can do is hope that reason and logic will prevail from both sides.
Two very proud nations with very smart people at the helm, I’m sure, but they’re on a collision course, unfortunately.
