No one thought it can get any worse, but Jimmy Carter proved that the USA was an empty shell. Luckily, voters saved the country once and Reagan did much to restore America's glory, but the Deep State kept ruling.
When they saw the chance to get back on the horse and reap the rewards from the Peace Dividend that Reagan and Bush (the father) scored for humanity, they ran an inexperienced progressive womanizer from Arkansas and the era of dismantling the greatest country ever started.
Liquidation of assets, dignity, national pride, industry, military and the elites celebrated like royalty.
